Felix Aldric (Book 2)
From What the Crown Costs
The one the tabloids love — the prettiest Aldric, the most charming, and the one who's never had to work for either. Séraphine followed Valentina, who followed someone before her, and the shape never changes: wonderful at the start, absent by the end, caring genuinely right up until he doesn't. The family has always registered it like weather. This is the year they stop letting it pass — first Céline, then Julian — and the charm, for once, doesn't settle it.
Full Name: Felix Henri Clément Aldric
Date of Birth: 18 October 2003
Height: 6'0"
Title: His Highness Prince Felix.
Voice: Quick, bright, a little too much on purpose. He can make whoever he's talking to feel like the only person worth talking to, and does it so easily that no one, including Felix, can always tell when he means it. The charm is reflexive rather than calculated, which is somehow both its appeal and its problem: it costs him nothing, so he spends it everywhere. He is genuinely funny, warmest when he's being teased back, and he deflects anything heavier than a joke before it can quite land on him.
Appearance: The prettiest of the Aldric brothers and the one who figured out youngest exactly what that was worth. Dark hair with a loose wave he has never had to work at, the family coloring unmistakable but the features softer than his brothers' — more of Constance in him, less of the hard architecture that makes Julian look like governance and Nicolas look like a warning. He photographs well from every angle, a fact the tabloids have been proving since he was fifteen and he has never pretended to be above enjoying. He dresses like someone for whom it all comes effortlessly, because it does.
Personality: Affectionate, enormously likeable, and unable to stay serious for longer than a moment requires. He loves his family and lands closest to Nicolas, the one person whose read on him he actually takes. With Julian his charm bounces off and he's privately relieved it does; with Lucien there's an easy, uncomplicated fondness that sometimes reaches further than anyone expects. The thing that defines this year is quieter and less flattering: Séraphine followed Valentina, who followed someone before her, and the shape never changes. He is wonderful at the beginning of things and absent by the end, charming far more readily than he is committed. He cares, genuinely, right up until the point he doesn't, and he has never had to sit with what that costs the people on the other side of it.
Background: Twenty-three, in Sorvaine for the winter, and otherwise wherever the season is brightest, He drifts in and out across the year, often trailing the Grand Prix circuit to turn up for Nicolas in person and stay for the parties that come with it. The new relationship with Séraphine Aubert, a Paris influencer, is already in the European press before the relationship has properly begun, publicly adored on her side in a way he hasn't fully reckoned with on his. The family registers it the way they register weather. It is, by now, simply what Felix does. The pattern gets pushed too far. For the first time, the charm doesn't settle the matter, and Felix is left holding a question nobody has ever made him answer before.
