Moira Solvin is a city hospitality consultant with a notebook, a precise eye, and a professional dislike of vague reassurance. She has been hired to help Brindlewick prepare for tourism after years of being avoided by sensible travellers. The village is charming, certainly. It is also cursed in matters of hospitality.

The curse is not dangerous. It is worse, from a committee’s point of view: embarrassing. It exposes false welcome, over-polished promises, grudging preparation, and any attempt to hide shame behind charm. For a village desperate to repair its reputation, this presents several practical difficulties. For Moira, who has spent her life being valued only while fixing things, it presents several personal ones.

At The Turned Pillow inn, Moira finds lumpy mattresses, correcting ledgers, opinionated furniture, and people who refuse to fit neatly into her categories. Bettan Crowe, the innkeeper, is too tired to be decorative. Pippa, her niece, is too blunt to be ignored. Orrit Mallow, the sign-painter, cares about dignity down to the spacing between letters. And Edris Mallow’s old curse records suggest Brindlewick’s problem was never magic alone.

To help the village welcome guests, Moira must learn that hospitality is not polish. It is truth, repair, food offered when meant, and a chair that stays where it is because someone finally sits down by choice.
