Small, old, and beautiful, ruled by the House of Aldric for four centuries and never once annexed, despite all of them spent being wanted. Its own language, its own crown, its own stubborn currency. Its deep history gives it weight; its medicine and its famous princes give it reach.

The formal capital, twenty-two kilometers inland on a limestone hill fortified since Roman times — medieval, ocher-stoned, and cold in the way of places that have mattered for a very long time. The Cathedral and the Palais share its summit; the Council, the ministries, the archives, and the old families' town houses fill the streets below. This is where Sorvaine is actually governed. Beautiful, watchful, and not remotely interested in charming you. The serious half of a two-capital country.

The coastal city, and the face Sorvaine turns to the world — a harbour of faded terracotta and yellow, a marina where great yachts ride beside working fishing boats, a plane-tree promenade made for sitting in the sun. Where the capital governs, Portarène is seen: summer receptions, the July Fête Nationale, Nicolas's Grand Prix each May, and the photographers always on the front.

Six generations of the oldest wine in Sorvaine, and two centuries of the finest music — a family of the soil that endowed a European conservatory and never saw anything strange in making both. The principality's university, in the cold serious capital of Vallecourt — a full institution with the range of faculties the word implies, from its medical school to its doctoral humanities, law to the sciences. Not the family's old nickname for the Collège, but the real thing: where a small country grows its own professionals rather than importing them. Its graduates fill the principality's hospitals, courts, archives, and ministries.

Officially the Aldric-Vauclaire Pharmaceutique; to the principality, just Aldric Pharmaceutique, or Mouret, or the company. Founded in 1961 by the Vauclaire family with the crown, it made the enzyme-inhibitor compounds half of Europe's medicine now depends on. The patents are Sorvaine's largest revenue and, through the crown's sole regulatory authority, its armor: the reason a country most of the world can't place is treated with such care.

The crown's own luxury house, founded by Prince Gaston in 1946 — fragrance, leather, and fine textiles under a single quiet label for eighty years. Its perfume begins in the hills, where Sorvaine grows lavender, jasmine, and rose the world's great houses cannot source anywhere else. If the pharmaceutical industry makes Sorvaine necessary, the Maison makes it desirable: the sunlit, fragrant, photographable face of the principality, and the reason it has an identity no patent could give it.
